Strength & Conditioning
Strength & Conditioning exercises involve lifting free weights and focusing on improving strength. Using these exercises will compliment distance runners. Introducing plyometrics which improves strength and reaction time to compliment running stride efficiency.
What are the goals for the program and training?
• Strength training which will compliment muscular endurance. We also focus on single leg exercises to compliment running.
• Develop core strength - to compliment running form when training and racing.
• Increase lower body strength to produce more power and increase the number of fast twitch fibres to improve speed.
• Increase upper body strength (not hypertrophy - building muscle) to increase arm power and strength when driving arms for leg power.
• Upper body strength is important to be able to catch your weight if you fall, to prevent further injuries, particularly with trail running.
• Balance is self explanatory, but particularly important for trail runners.
• Balance exercises also develop strength in the smaller stabiliser muscles in the ankles which will reduce the chance of injuries for example rolled ankle.
• Introduce new exercises to the participants so we can draw on these as the program develops.
RMC offers strength and conditioning sessions tailored to runners and athletes (or anyone else who wants to learn to lift weights correctly).
The S&C sessions are tailored to individuals, including beginners, where you learn the fundamentals of different exercises to build a safe technique for weightlifting. The goal of the sessions is to make people stronger, more resilient and reduce the risk of injury.Matt also designs and implements individual online S&C programs to improve athletic performance. The face-to-face sessions take place at the PCYC at Sutherland.
